Federico Garcia Lorca is a Spanish poet and dramatist. His best-known works are his Gypsy Songs, Songs (1927) and The Gypsy Ballads (1928, 1935). However, he is particularly known for intense, poetic tragedies evoking the passionate emotions of Spanish life.

They included the folk trilogy, Blood Wedding (1933), Yerma (1934), and The House of Bernarda Alba (1936).

Lorca’s poem ‘Farewell’ is a romantic lyric expressing a longing for the senses to feast on even after death. The reference to the open balcony is a suggestive refrain:

“If I die,
Leave the balcony open.
The little boy is eating oranges.
(From my balcony I can see him.)
The reaper is harvesting the wheat.
(From my balcony I can hear him.)
If I die,
Leave the balcony open!”
